Seasonal Variability of Subthermocline Eddy Kinetic Energy East of the Philippines

Abstract Seasonal modulation of subthermocline eddy kinetic energy (EKE) east the Philippines and its associated dynamics are studied, using mooring measurements outputs from an eddy-resolving ocean general circulation model for period 2000 to 2017. Significantly high EKE appears below thermocline in latitude band between 5° 14°N Philippines. Separated by 10°N, northern southern parts region shows nearly opposite seasonal cycles, with magnitude reaching a maximum early spring minimum summer part winter region. Further investigation indicates that both baroclinic barotropic instabilities essential generating eddies, but variation is mainly caused instability. The instability evolution North Equatorial Undercurrent Halmahera Eddy, respectively.
